Taking it to the Streets
The Clay Studio, located in Philadelphia’s Old City neighborhood since 1974, is currently preparing for a move to nearby Kensington. Together with the organisation’s curator, Jennifer Zwilling, artist Roberto Lugo conceived a disarmingly simple idea: he takes his wheel out into the streets of Kensington where he grew up and starts throwing. It’s an unusual sight, and he reliably gets a crowd of interested local people, some of whom have never seen a potter at work. Zwilling says that for her and her colleagues, ‘the pop-up wheel-throwing events provide a great opportunity to engage our new neighbors and invite them to be partners in our planning process’.

Celebrating Philadelphia’s American Craft Fellows
As a part of Craft NOW Philadelphia, a partnership amongst the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Center for Art in Wood, The Clay Studio presents "Fellowship in Clay." This exhibition celebrates four of the most influential ceramic artists working in Philadelphia in the last 65 years.
