Elyse Saperstein: Recent Sculptural Work

Dec 4th - Jan 8th, 1982

Resident Artist Solo Exhibition: Elyse Saperstein

The Clay Studio will feature a show of recent sculptural work by resident artist Elyse Saperstein, opening Friday December-4 and continuing through the 8th of January.

The work is composed of small architectonic modules and structures whose hidden and elusive interiors are accessible only with the viewer's eye. The more complex pieces, 2-3 arranged modules, present a variety of spacial images which are best viewed from different perspectives. The many geometric-shaped apertures. serve a dual purpose: they provide limited accessibility to: light while at the same time adding to the sense of mystery

and containment inherent in the pieces. Although this handbuilt terra cotta sculpture is reminiscent of older civilizations, it is ambiguous in specific reference. It departs from the artist's earlier work in that the forms, although primary, are less naturalistic. The artist attributes this change to her recent it move to a more urban setting.

Elyse Saperstein has studied with Jun Kaneko and George Mason at The Cranbrook Academy of Art where she received her MA degree in 1980. She has been an artist-in-residence at both Millersville State College and Cedar Crest College.
