Originally from England, Browne came to the US and attended the School for the American Craftsman at Rochester Institute of Technology. There she studied with Franz Wildenhain, whom she sights as a major inspiration to her artistic career. Browne taught at the University of Illinois at Champagne-Urbana, and then at Philadelphia College of Art (University of the Arts) in the 1960’s and 70’s, and at The Clay Studio in the 1980’s and 90’s. Well-known in Rochester, NY, her work is not well known in Philadelphia, we hope to introduce a new hometown audience to her expressive and painterly ceramic art.
This exhibition will highlight new and previous work by Julia Browne, a long time Philadelphia ceramic artist. Her work is expressive and painterly, addressing both sculptural wall pieces, and vessel-based works. Browne's long teaching career influenced generations of ceramic artists.
