The Clay Studio 1989-90 Lecture Series concludes again this year with the Forum, a program designed to introduce two nationally emerging artists to Philadelphia. This year's Forum is based on the theme "Innovations in Tableware" and features Californian clay artist, Sandy Simon and Bruce Cochrane from Ontario. The two will be speaking January 19th at 6:30 PM in the Van Pelt Auditorium in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. There will be a reception in the West Foyer of the Museum starting at 5:30 PM. An accompanying exhibition at the Clay Studio featuring the works of these two artists will run from January 7 through 27. A reception for the artists in connection with the exhibition will be held Saturday January 20th, 2 to S PM, at the Clay Studio. Gallery hours of The Clay Studio are Tuesday through Friday 1 to 6 PM, Saturdays and Sundays 12 to 5 PM.
California artist, Sandy Simon works primarily with porcelain but her pieces have little in common with the "ethereal" quality often associated with that material. Spontaneous and colorful Sandy's work has a freedom of movement and an earthiness that invites everyday use rather than confinement in a china cabinet. She is a NEA Fellowship recipient and has exhibited and taught extensively both around the country and abroad.
As the first Canadian invited to speak in the Lecture Series, Bruce Cochrane provides a glimpse of the thriving clay art scene in our Northern neighbor. Perhaps best known for his oval earthenware casseroles, which have been featured in Ceramics Monthly, Bruce also produces an entire line of unusuaJly designed tableware. He is currently Ceramics Master at the Sheridan.School of Craft and Design in Oakville, Ontario, and has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout Canada and increasingly in this country.
